Prof Zak Nel has a career spanning over 40 years, and his passion for career counselling remains central to his life’s work. As a registered Counselling Psychologist with the South African Health Professions Council, Prof Nel has trained a generation of counselling psychologists and developed specialised research knowledge on career counselling instruments and methodologies. His comprehensive approach integrates international career counselling models with his deep understanding of education and work environments, ensuring that each client receives holistic and tailored career guidance.
Prof Nel's academic journey began at Stellenbosch University, where he completed his BA Hons, HED, and MA (cum laude) degrees. His career started in Durban as a teacher and progressed to becoming a school psychologist. In 1975, he joined Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg) as a student counsellor, later earning his doctoral degree and a post-doctoral stipend in Career Counselling Research at the University of Minnesota.
Zak Nel Jnr is an Industrial Psychologist and PhD candidate at the University of the Free State, focusing his research on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in career counselling. His research involves an international comparative study that examines how AI is reshaping career counselling and career development globally. Zak Jnr’s career counselling journey began while working closely with Prof Zak Nel, and he has since developed his own fresh approach to navigating the modern world of work.
Zak Jnr is a registered Industrial Psychologist and Psychometrist, an active member of SACDA (South African Career Development Association), and PsySSA (Psychological Society of South Africa). He works under the supervision of Counselling, Industrial, and Clinical psychologists, ensuring that his clients receive high-quality guidance tailored to their individual needs.
Carla Nel is the Practice Manager at Prof Zak Nel's Career Counselling Practice. She holds a BSc Degree from the University of the North West and has extensive teaching experience, having taught Consumer Sciences at St Vincent's School for the Deaf. Carla is fluent in South African Sign Language (SASL), which enables her to effectively communicate with a diverse range of clients.
As Practice Manager, Carla handles the day-to-day operations of the practice, including client management. She deals regularly with distressed clients, offering them support and ensuring their needs are met with compassion and professionalism. Her role is crucial in maintaining the smooth running of the practice and providing a comforting environment for clients who may be facing significant career-related challenges.
